Maris & I were introduced to the incredibly fun game of Texas 42 Dominoes by my parents last week, and ever since then I can’t stop thinking about it. i think i have had at least 3 dreams about playing Texas 42 since then. Weird? Probably so, but until you have played…don’t judge. You don’t know what you’re missing out on. It’s one of the best things I’ve learned to do in a long time.
I can still remember growing up as a kid watching my family play Texas 42. I can still remember watching my Pa sit there at the table with his classic red dominoes. All of the family still talks about his ability to know what was in your hand before the game even got going. I wish i had learned to play when I was a kid. I wish I had been able to enjoy a game with Pa while he was still alive. I would have loved to learn his techniques. I would have loved to enjoy that quality time.
Even though that’s something I won’t ever get to do I am excited to make Texas 42 a tradition in mine & Maris’ marriage. It’s a great way to have fun with friends & family. It allows you to sit around the dinner table, have a conversation, while having some friendly competition. I want my kids to grow up, and learn this game. I want to have family game nights, and I want them to carry on this tradition.
If you like to play Dominoes then you need a good set of them. I bought a cheap set on a whim while my parents were in town last week. I paid $10 for them, and they looked to be legit from the picture on the box. We got home only to realize that the dots were actually stickers!! Those poor things only lasted a week. I had to throw them away this week because all of the dots rubbed off while we were playing at the staff retreat.
I came home today, and was met with an awesome stash of surprise birthday money sent from my inlaws! I got the idea to use the money on some dominoes. I got onto ebay, and found a set of vintage black dominoes with off-white inlays. They were made here in the USA by the same company that made my Pa’s red dominoes. I could not pass them up, and I had to bid on them! I found out tonight that I won them! I am now the proud owner of an awesome set of black vintage dominoes. I can’t wait to get these things in. A huge thanks to Bud & Linda for the birthday hook-up! Let the games & family traditions begin!
Do you guys have any family traditions or games that you like to play? What are you wanting to pass down to your children?

dude! those are some freaking sweet dominoes!! i grew up with my parents/aunts/uncles playing rook all the time-but i never learned how to play because it was always reserved for the adults.
I can’t wait for you guys to teach us how to play! Those dominos look awesome. We always played games-didn’t matter which ones. The hot game in our family now is Mexican Train Dominos-requires a whole different set but still pretty fun!
yes! 42 is simply amazing. whats even better and will really make you think (if you are the domino counting type) is 88. 42 but with two sets of double 6 dominoes. its a family tradition for us.
ginger- i know. i felt the same way as a kid
laura – we have to get this going!

Bro, I play 42 in the summer time like its going out of style, I have played for over 12 hours in one day. I love 42 more than any other game. The bad thing is that no one knows how to play anymore……. Glad to here you found the best game ever!!!!

I was intrigued when I read your comments about 42. It’s so easy to get addicted to the game. Your story is typical of many 42 players. I added a link to your blog at my 42 web site, Texas42.net, so others can enjoy it, too.
